Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions
Gender equality is a fundamental human right and the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Even so, gender remains one of the most pervasive forms of discrimination across all areas of life. While gender inequalities can affect anyone, impeding progress on global human development, it is women and girls who face the most prejudice.
On the ground in some 170 countries and territories, UNDP works to eliminate gender inequalities through a range of targeted, gender-focused programmes and strategies that accelerate structural transformation. Working in partnership with governments, civil society organizations, the private sector, academia and think tanks, UNDP seeks to ensure that gender equality remains central to development efforts and that the needs, experiences and contributions of women and girls are considered in decision-making.
UNDP’s gender equality awarding and certification programmes are focused on creating equitable and inclusive work environments, where women and men have equal potential to contribute, benefit and progress. Providing incentives for public institutions and private enterprises – and for UNDP itself – to meet gender equality standards in the workplace also accelerates progress towards meeting the 2030 Agenda.
Launched in 2011, this innovative corporate certificate programme provides incentives to UNDP country offices to incorporate gender equality into all aspects of their development work. Nearly 50 UNDP country offices have been certified and the effort continues to expand.
Currently in place across 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Central Europe, the programme has certified more than 6,000 workplaces globally.
This programme is being piloted among 15 multinational corporations in various sectors and regions. It is expected to have a strong impact not only on corporations’ work environments but also on their value chains.
UNDP is also supporting other UN agencies to develop their own internal incentive programmes based on gender equality standards, including the World Food Programme (WFP) Gender Transformation Programme, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Gender Accreditation.
Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and all 17 of the SDGs. it is a specific development goal (SDG 5) and is also reflected in 45 targets and 54 gender-specific indicators of SDGs.
Despite much work in this area, substantial gender inequalities persist in all countries. Discrimination in law, violence against women and girls, unequal access to economic parity and women’s lack of involvement in decision-making continue to hinder sustainable development for all. SDG 5 and its targets provide public institutions with an opportunity for action to achieve equality.
Meanwhile, by SDG 16, the 2030 Agenda calls for institutions to transform inequality and facilitate institutional change. In most regions, remarkable progress has been made, but there is still a lot to be done to improve credibility and inclusion, as well as transparency and accountability in public institutions.
The Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions is designed to help regional, national and local public institutions fulfill the promises of the 2030 Agenda.
A diverse and committed group of gender equality professionals with many years of experience endorse the Seal. A team passionate about helping to make a difference in the lives of women and people around the world.
