The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima is awarded with the 1st Price of Good Local Practices on Gender equality in the category of Paritary Democracy

The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, certified in May 2022 with the UNDP Bronze Gender Equality Seal, has been awarded the 1st Prize for Best Local Practice with a Gender Perspective in the “Parity Democracy” category witg the experience “Technical assistance and mentoring to the Commission of Adolescent Women Leaders of Metropolitan Lima (COMULÍA)”.

The jury of the VI Edition of the Ibero-American UIM Awards for Good Local Practices with a Gender Perspective, made up of the Board of Directors of the Ibero-American Network of Municipalities for Gender Equality and the Evaluation Committee of the Technical Office of the Ibero-American Union of Municipalists, has selected the experience “Technical assistance and mentoring to the Commission of Adolescent Women Leaders of Metropolitan Lima (COMULÍA)” as an outstanding experience in Ibero-America linked to Local Practices with a Gender Perspective.

Other selected practices have been the “Network against street harassment: Immediate Shelter Spaces for victims of Street Harassment and Safe Routes” developed by the Directorate of Disability, Human Rights and Gender of the Municipality of Tafí Viejo, in Argentina, which obtained the first Prize for Best Local Practice in the category “Policies to prevent and eradicate violence against women and girls”. The experience “Mainstreaming the Gender Perspective in the Anticorruption Policy of the State of Colima”, developed by the Citizen Participation Committee of the Anticorruption System of the State of Colima, Mexico, won the First Prize for Best Local Practice in the category “Gender Mainstreaming in Local Public Policies”. The Municipality of Belo Horizonte in Brazil won the First Prize for Best Local Practice with in the category “STEM: Women, Science and Technology” for the “Programming Sonhos Delas” experience.

The UIM Awards for Good Local Practices with a Gender Perspective respond to the objectives of the Ibero-American Network of Municipalities for Gender Equality (RIMIG – IBERGÉNERO), and are intended to recognize, value, strengthen and socialize good local practices with gender approach that exist in Ibero-America to accompany new processes such as “mentor cities”.

The award ceremony will take place within the framework of the VI Ibero-American Summit of Local Gender Agendas, to be held in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Spain from October 18 to 21, 2022.

Undoubtedly, this award is nourished by the sustained commitment and effort that the municipality of Lima has been making since 2020 to mainstream gender in its work, aligning its processes, services and organization to UNDP Gender Equality Seal Standards. As UNDP we join the congratulations to the municipality and in particular to the Women’s and Equality Management Department for the great and expert job they do.
